Lady Vikes defeated the Missy Gators 62-39 on Tuesday
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Warren Central High School’s girls’ basketball team defeated crosstown rival Vicksburg High School 62–39 on Tuesday night. The win marked the first time second-year head coach Heather Casey has beaten the Missy Gators.
“It feels great because it’s a rivalry, and we didn’t forget about last year, so we worked on the things we struggled with,” Casey said. “We switched things up in the third quarter, and I told them to be leaders tonight.”
Camara Evans and Arrionna Jenkins powered the Lady Vikes with 19 and 16 points, respectively.
“To say we didn’t win much last year, this game was huge and the feeling is great,” Jenkins said.
Shaniya Lewis scored the first points for Warren Central with a hard-earned layup, but Vicksburg’s Jada Erwin quickly answered with one of her own. Evans’ free throws and a 3-pointer from Erwin kept the opening period close, with WC holding a 13–12 lead after the first quarter.
Evans took control in the second quarter, and Jenkins dominated inside the paint to push the halftime margin to 27–18. Both Erwin and Evans knocked down 3-pointers before the break.
The third quarter was the highest-scoring for both teams. Kylee Chambers hit a key 3-pointer for Warren Central, while Jenkins continued to convert easy layups. Jordan Grace and Aaliyah Mims kept Vicksburg active on the boards, but the Lady Vikes extended their advantage to 46–31 entering the fourth.
Madison Ward and Karyn Henderson added key points in the final quarter, helping WC seal the win. Evans continued to control the pace down the stretch.
“We had to go out and play hard because they beat us in district last year, so we had to come out and get it,” Evans said.
Lewis finished with nine points for WC. Chambers and Ward added six each, and Keasia Williams scored three.
For Vicksburg, Mims led with 10 points, while Erwin scored eight. Grace finished with six, Raylyn Parsons had five, Aaliyah Williams and Nakia Jeffers scored four apiece, and Madisyn Kimble added two.
