VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Mayor George Flaggs Jr., Co-Chair of the Mississippi River Cities & Towns Initiative (MRCTI), recently traveled to Washington, D.C., for a joint meeting between MRCTI and the Great Lakes & St. Lawrence Cities Initiative (GLSCI).

This gathering brought together elected officials from communities along the Mississippi River, the Great Lakes, and the St. Lawrence River, including representatives from Canada.

The meeting featured roundtable discussions and meetings with U.S. Senators, focusing on the economic and environmental significance of North America’s water resources. With MRCTI and GLSCI collectively representing over 300 mayors and the majority of North America’s fresh water resources, this united effort is focused on advancing economic development and ensuring the long-term sustainability of these vital waterways.

During the discussions, Mayor Flaggs highlighted the Mississippi River’s essential role in Vicksburg’s economy, infrastructure, and future growth.

“The Mississippi River is one of Vicksburg’s greatest assets, shaping our economy, commerce, and way of life,” said Mayor Flaggs. “It supports trade, transportation, tourism, and recreation while also playing a critical role in flood management and environmental conservation. Our ability to sustain and enhance this resource is key to the long-term success of our city and the entire region. Partnering with other leaders through MRCTI and GLSCI strengthens our ability to advocate for policies that protect and maximize the potential of our waterways.”

Mayor Flaggs reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the protection and strategic utilization of these water resources, recognizing their role in economic growth, environmental sustainability, and public health.
