VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Anthony McCloud and Carson Gleese left their mark on the 2024-25 basketball season, each averaging nearly 20 points per game while leading the St. Aloysius boys’ basketball team to a 14-10 record under head coach Walter Hallberg IV.

For their outstanding performances, McCloud and Gleese have been named VDN Boys’ Basketball Co-Players of the Year.

“I feel like this year was a success. We could’ve done a little more, but overall, we improved from previous seasons,” Gleese said.

Gleese averaged 18.9 points per game, doubling his offensive output from his sophomore year when he averaged nine points. His growth as a player stemmed from dedication and early-morning training sessions.

“I had to focus on myself and become the best athlete I could,” he said. “I was in the gym from from 5 in the morning until 8, just working on my game.”

With Gleese at the helm, St. Aloysius secured a 63-50 district win over Adams County Christian School, where he scored 30 points. His career-high came against Silliman Institute, where he posted 34 points.

Gleese, known for his quickness and leadership, led Warren County in scoring and earned All-District honors.

“I want to thank God for this award because this is special, and only the best are recognized this way,” he said.

Anthony McCloud

McCloud was a versatile force for the Flashes, contributing as a ball-handler, rebounder, and top scorer. He averaged 18.4 points per game, keeping opponents on edge with his ability to drive inside or hit long-range shots.

“I think everything went pretty well, but we wanted to go further,” McCloud said. “We went from fourth in the district to second, so I’m pleased with the overall outcome.”

On Jan. 13, McCloud made history, surpassing 1,000 career points in a 68-21 win over Benton Academy. He scored 29 points that night, all in the first half.

Recognized as one of the top players in the MAIS, McCloud became the only Warren County player this season to sign with a four-year college, committing to Tougaloo College.

McCloud is only the second player in St. Aloysius history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. He expressed gratitude for being recognized alongside Gleese.

“I’m excited about this award because I’ve been working toward this since I started playing varsity basketball,” he said.

McCloud and Gleese’s achievements cement their place among the best players to wear a St. Aloysius jersey, leaving a lasting impact on the program.
