JACKSON, Miss. (VDN) — A Madison man has been sentenced to 40 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to two counts of possession of child exploitation material, Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced.

Britton Butler was sentenced on April 16 by Madison County Circuit Court Judge Dewey Arthur. Butler will serve eight years day for day without the possibility of parole, followed by five years of supervised probation. He must also register as a sex offender upon release.

The case originated from multiple CyberTip reports and was investigated and prosecuted by the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.

As part of the sentencing, Butler has been ordered to pay $1,000 each to the Mississippi Children’s Trust Fund, the Mississippi Crime Victim Compensation Fund and the Victims of Human Trafficking and Commercial Sexual Exploitation Fund.

“My office will continue to hold those who exploit and prey on Mississippi’s children accountable,” Fitch said in a statement. “Together, we can make Mississippi a safer place for everyone. But we need your help.“If you suspect a child is being exploited or abused, please report it to my office. Your tip could save a life.”

Reports of suspected online child sexual exploitation can be made to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children by calling 1-800-843-5678 or online at cybertipline.org. The hotline operates 24/7 and forwards tips to the Attorney General’s Office, which oversees the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force for Mississippi.
