VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — In response to the recent directive to demobilize all AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) members serving at the Vicksburg campus, Mayor George Flaggs Jr. has taken formal action by writing to members of Mississippi’s congressional delegation and the White House.

In his letters, Flaggs expressed concern over the impact the decision will have on the 351 service members stationed in Vicksburg — 240 of whom were just three weeks away from completing their terms and graduating in May.

“I’ve seen firsthand the dedication and impact these young people have made in our community and surrounding areas,” Flaggs said. He attended last year’s AmeriCorps graduation ceremony in Vicksburg. “To see their service cut short so close to completion is deeply disheartening — not just for them, but for the communities that rely on their work.”

Flaggs is urging federal leaders to reconsider the demobilization directive and take swift action to “preserve the mission, integrity and future of the AmeriCorps NCCC program in Vicksburg.”
