Myrlie Evers Civil Rights Park to open Wednesday

Published

on

This milestone event commemorates the creation of a space designed for reflection, education, and community engagement. Situated on historically significant ground, the park serves as both a tribute to the enduring impact of Myrlie Evers and a commitment to preserving the story of the civil rights movement for future generations.

Alderman TJ Mayfield said. “We are honored to celebrate the life and legacy of Myrlie Evers while creating a place where history can be experienced and carried forward. Mrs. Evers is an incredibly accomplished civil rights figure, and it is long overdue that she is being properly acknowledged in her hometown.”

The program will feature special guest speaker Reena Evers, along with remarks from Mayor Thompson, General Robert Crear, and other distinguished guests. Master of Ceremonies Linda Fondren will host the event. Attendees will also have the opportunity to experience several key features of the park, including: The Knowledge Tree, a Civil Rights Mural featuring several local legends, a newly accessible walking trail with interpretive storytelling signs, and the Kuhn Hospital Wellness & Reflection Wall.

The grand opening is made possible through partnerships with the Catfish Row Museum (Vicksburg Interpretive Center), Shape Up Mississippi, the City of Vicksburg, the Mississippi Arts Commission, and United Way of West Central Mississippi.

Community members, local leaders, and visitors are encouraged to attend this meaningful occasion as Vicksburg honors its history, celebrates progress, and inspires future generations.
