National Weather Service offers virtual volunteer program
JACKSON, MS. – The National Weather Service is offering a virtual student volunteer program for high school or college students in meteorology or a related field. The deadline is September 1, 2024. The virtual program will be held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and will last from mid-September through April with breaks during the holidays.
The National Weather Service Jackson, MS student volunteer program provides an opportunity for students of meteorology and related fields (emergency management, hydrology, GIS, information technology, social science) to receive experience working with professionals in our office. The fall/spring session will again be virtual to ensure opportunities for remote participants. Volunteer students will have the opportunity to learn about duties performed by our staff and complete related projects and research. Also, students who decide to seek a career with the NWS will receive mentorship and support from NWS employees. Volunteer students will have the opportunity to conduct practice weather briefings, assist with severe weather verification, and to complete a project with mentorship from our employees.
Sessions will be at 7 PM CT on Tuesdays. Opportunities during this session will include:
- Weekly workshops
- Individual self paced training plans
