NICU At Children’s Of Mississippi Celebrated International Kangaroo Care Day
Yesterday, the NICU at Children’s of Mississippi celebrated International Kangaroo Care Day, emphasizing the benefits of skin-to-skin contact between parents and their newborns. This practice, known as Kangaroo Care, helps stabilize heart rates, improve breathing patterns, and strengthen parent-infant bonds, especially for premature and low birth weight babies.
To mark the occasion, nurses and neonatologists presented families with handmade baby blankets and information on the benefits of Kangaroo Care. Dr. Emily Johnson, a leading neonatologist, highlighted the significance of the day, stating, “Kangaroo Care promotes healing and growth in a way that nothing else can.”
Parents like Sarah and John Thompson, whose daughter Emma has been in the NICU for three weeks, shared their experiences. “Holding Emma close and feeling her heartbeat has been a lifeline for us,” said Sarah.
The event included educational sessions where healthcare professionals demonstrated Kangaroo Care techniques and answered parents’ questions.
