One Dead in Mattingly Street Fire
VICKSBURG, Miss. – Just after 6 p.m. the Vicksburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 718 Mattingly Street, near the River City Rescue Mission. Initial reports stated that an individual was in the home at the time.
Engine 7 was the first truck to arrive on the scene reporting the structure was partially involved. Engine 6 and another unit along with Battalion One Henry Williams were at the scene.
According to Chief Derrick Stamps, one person has died in the fire. She has been identified as 31-year-old Shiquira Maniel.
“Firefighters arrived on the scene, and they extinguished the blaze and continued to look for the missing people, and we found one confirmed dead in the bathroom,” said Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps. “The family is distraught about it, which is understandable. We definitely send our condolences, prayers, and thoughts to them, and hopefully, we can get some closure for them.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire Chief Stamps stated that the Mississippi Fire Marshal had arrived on scene to assist in the investigation.
Message from Chief Stamps
In a message, Chief Stamps said, “At approximately 6:11 p.m., the Vicksburg Fire Department received an urgent call regarding a structure fire, with reports indicating that two individuals were trapped inside. Upon their swift arrival at the scene, firefighters were met with a harrowing sight: a residential home engulfed in roaring flames and thick, billowing smoke. Without hesitation, the brave crews donned their protective gear and launched an aggressive interior attack, carefully navigating the intense heat and hazardous conditions as they searched for the trapped occupants. It was during this perilous search that they discovered a tragic scene—a 31-year-old woman found lifeless in the bathtub, a victim of the devastating fire. After intense efforts, the courageous firefighters succeeded in extinguishing the flames, bringing the inferno under control. The Vicksburg Fire Department extends its heartfelt condolences to the family during this unimaginably difficult time.”
