One Injured in Train Derailment Incident
VICKSBURG, MS. – A train derailment occurring at the junction of Mulberry and Oak St., just before 1 p.m. left one injured. The incident escalated once it was discovered a non-employee of the train company was trapped underneath.
“At approximately 12:38 p.m. the Vicksburg Fire Department responded to a distress call reporting a train derailment at the junction of Mulberry and Oak St. Upon arrival, Vicksburg Fire personnel discovered a 50-year-old male trapped under a rail cart,” said Fire Chief Derrick Stamps in a text message to Vicksburg Daily News.
Heavy response from the Vicksburg Police Department, the Vicksburg Fire Department and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office led to the digging and recovery of the man, who was then transported to the hospital.
Assistant Fire Chief Trey Martin told the Vicksburg Daily News that the patient will have a long recovery process. Police Chief Penny Jones also VDN that extra equipment was needed so they began making calls in an attempt to get everything needed to save the victim.
AirCare was called in to assist but was unable to fly due to the weather. The one injured person is now being transported to a Jackson area hospital by ambulance.
There is no official word on what led to the derailment.
