VICKSBURG, MS. – Vicksburg Intermediate School celebrated and honored their students who either showed growth, achieved proficiency, or scored advanced on one or more of the State ELA, Math or Science tests, known as MAAPS, at yesterday’s Leadership Awards celebration.

The celebration began with a handful of students giving their classmates a reminder to “press pause”. That in times of frustration or anger to press pause and count to three before responding out of anger, a topic of the Leader in Me curriculum.

According to Vicksburg Intermediate School Principal Lakesha Batty, roughly 300 students in total showed growth, achieved proficiency, or scored advanced from last years testing. Of the 300, roughly one hundred were sixth graders last year and have now graduated to the junior high schools.

The ceremony then went on to announce and honor each of the 194 current students for their successes, twenty-two of them had perfect scores. Those twenty-two have their pictures adorned along the fence line like athletes.

Children will rise

“We set very high expectations, as we truly believe that if you set the expectation, children will rise,” said Principal Batty, “We use our essential programs and principles that are set and established in our Leader in Me program. The students have really bought in to it, [and] our teachers have bought in to it. We’re working so hard to get our parents to buy in to it, so it can become a part of everyday life, and not a program, but habits that we truly live by.”

Vicksburg Daily News is pleased to report that those words ring true. In spite of the event being during the work day, nearly every single child had a parent or grandparent in attendance, with roughly 500 people filling the auditorium. Principal Batty attributed this in part to communication.

“We make it a point to make sure we communicate and even over-communicate to our parents to make sure they are fully aware of whats going on at the school,” said Principal Batty. “They have a constant reminder where to be, when to be.”

As another example, it was announced during this event that an open house later this week will give the parents an opportunity tospend a the day in the life of their children, including changing classes and sitting at their child’s desk.
