Warming Hands and Hearts: Vicksburg-Warren Library Expands Winter Clothing Drive
VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Vicksburg-Warren County Public Library is continuing their 38 year tradition of collecting hats, gloves, and scarves for children of Vicksburg. Due to the success of the outreach program, the library has expanded the program this year to include adult items.
“We’ve added a tree for adults this year right by the front door,” said Lesa Foster, Inter-library Loan librarian, who helps to coordinate the drive. ““We are taking scarves, hats, jackets, socks; anything to help keep people warm this winter.”
The library partners with local organizations to ensure the donated items go to those who need it most.
“We have several people who donate every year and some of these are handmade,” said Marie Cunningham, Vicksburg-Warren Library’s children’s librarian. “The community support has really been exploding. We’ve had to add a second tree for the children’s items. The library has pictures going back to the 1990’s of the trees filled with gloves and hats, many homemade, that are saved in the library archives.”
Handmade items as well as store bought are welcomed. All items can be dropped off during normal business hours at the Vicksburg-Warren County Library. For more information, visit the Vicksburg-Warren County Public Library website here or call (601) 636-6411.
