PCA’s Massey selected as VDN’s Offensive Player of the Year
A record-breaking senior year has led to Porter’s Chapel Academy’s John Wyatt Massey being named VDN’s Offensive Player of the Year.
Massey, a senior at PCA, led the Eagles to a successful 12-1 season under Head Coach Blake Purvis where things were nothing short of magical. They also made it to the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
On November 3, Massey did the unthinkable when he threw seven touchdowns to break Warren County’s single-game record in a 53-18 victory over Deer Creek. On the same night he also broke the county’s record for single-season touchdowns (40). He finished his senior year with 40 touchdowns and only five interceptions.
“Breaking those were obviously important to me but was more focused on winning games and bringing home a championship but it really helped by having good receivers and lineman,” Massey said.
Massey’s senior season was filled with nothing but highlights as he threw 28 more touchdowns than in the previous year. One game he recalls is when PCA pulled off a 26-18 double overtime win against Riverdale.
“The team effort it took to pull that off was incredible because we weren’t playing good offensively but the defense eventually picked us up,” Massey said.
Massey showed true leadership in 2023 by taking control of the high-powered offense that averaged over 47 points per game. He easily testified that he didn’t do it alone and the entire team played their part.
“I’m very appreciative and I wouldn’t be here without every one of the players on the field,” Massey said.
Massey plans to keep his options open about playing college football as he is now preparing for his senior baseball. He is now the third individual to ever receive this award.
“I had a great support system along the way especially when it came to my teammates, coaches and parents,” Massey added.
