VDN Received Three Separate Reports of Shots Fired Sunday Night
VICKSBURG, MS – Three separate reports of shots fired kept Vicksburg police units busy Sunday night. According to the person reporting to the Vicksburg Daily News, the first incident reportedly happened in the early evening near First East and Farmer. A member of the Vicksburg Daily News team also heard these shots.
The second notification the Vicksburg Daily News received was around 7:30 p.m. According to the community member, they heard 40-45 shots in the west-north-west part of the city. The person reporting these shots to the Vicksburg Daily News is believed to be credible.
The third report was in the area of Martha and Grammar Streets at around 11 p.m. More than one person notified the Vicksburg Daily News of the sound of gunfire in that location.
It is not know at this time if the Vicksburg Police Department found any evidence of shell casings related to these reported events. It is not uncommon for police to respond to a shots fired call and not find any evidence of the shooting.
There are times when fireworks, a car backfiring, and other loud noises sound like gunfire, especially from a distance. These three separate incidents were either reported to the Vicksburg Daily News by more than one person or from a credible source.
In October 2023, Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones decided to stop the public from hearing police calls on scanners. Chief Jones listed a myriad of reasons, including insinuations that a local news outlet sensationalized stories to get clicks.
In our system of government, the Mayor is also the Police Commissioner. Commissioner George Flaggs has stated publicly that he supports Chief Jones decision. At a meeting shortly after the decision to stop the public from hearing police calls, Mayor Flaggs stated that crime was down.
