Vicksburg Officials Urge Winter Storm Preparedness Ahead of Freezing Temperatures, Chance of Snow

VICKSBURG, Miss. – Ahead of tomorrow’s winter storm, Vicksburg’s public officials are encouraging citizens to take necessary precautions and to take the weather seriously.
The National Weather Service’s current forecast is now calling for a 50 percent chance of snow starting around 3 a.m. Tuesday morning with new snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
For the next four days, temperatures will be below freezing at night (with Tuesday night’s low being 13 degrees) with temperatures above freezing during the day, causing potentially hazardous road conditions.
“Freezing temperatures can create hazardous conditions, and we want to make sure our residents are prepared,” said Mayor Flaggs. “We are working closely with emergency management teams to monitor the situation and respond as needed, but we need everyone to take this weather seriously.”
Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps encouraged residents that it is “essential to keep safety in mind regarding heating equipment. We can look forward to ensuring that ovens and stoves are solely for cooking, not heating. We’ll make sure our space heaters are positioned at least three feet away from anything flammable, and it’s a great time to check that our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in optimal working order.”
Winter Weather Safety Tips:
- Protect People: Limit time outdoors in freezing temperatures, dress in layers, and
check on elderly neighbors and those in need. - Protect Pets: Bring pets inside during freezing temperatures, ensure they have warm
shelter if left outdoors, and provide fresh food and water. - Protect Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes and let faucets drip to prevent freezing.
- Prepare for Power Outages: Have flashlights, extra batteries, blankets, and an
emergency supply of food and water. - Use Heating Equipment Safely: Never use ovens or stoves for heat, keep space
heaters at least three feet away from anything flammable, and ensure carbon monoxide
detectors are working. - Stay Off Icy Roads: If travel is not necessary, stay home and avoid driving on icy or
snow-covered roads.
Mayor Flaggs also assured that city crews are prepared to respond to icy conditions and ensure the safety of our roads and infrastructure. Residents should report downed power lines or outages to Entergy and any emergencies to 911.
“As always, our priority is the safety and well-being of our community,” Mayor Flaggs stated. “Please take precautions, look out for one another, and stay informed as we navigate this winter weather together.”
The Vicksburg Daily News will be monitoring the current winter storm conditions and will update with any new information when available.
