Vicksburg’s power lifter LeAndrew Drake finished second at the state meet

VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN)—Vicksburg High School power lifter LeAndrew Drake finished second at the state meet last month. Drake lifted in the 181-pound weight class, where he bench-pressed 285 pounds, squatted 580 pounds, and deadlifted 530 pounds.

The junior athlete was able to experience his first time at the state meet after much training and preparation to compete with the best.
“It was fun and I was ready,” Drake said. “I trained four days a week and made sure I was eating right so I could maintain my weight to be able to lift with my weight class.”
Before reaching the state meet, Drake reached another goal by finishing on top at the North State Meet at Lake Cormorant. At North State, he squatted 505 pounds, benched pressed 275 pounds, and deadlifted 510 pounds.
“It made me feel happy when I came in the first place but I was greedy so I focused on the state meet,” he added.
Drake is led by VHS Powerlifting Head Coach DeCorey Knight Sr. He is also a member of the band where he plays the saxophone.
Although his powerlifting season is officially over, Drake has bigger and better plans for next year when he is a senior on the team.
“For next year I plan to win all three of my meets,” Drake said. “I not only want to win those meets, but I also want to break some records along the way.”
