VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN)St. Aloysius Junior High School baseball team wrapped up their season last week. The Flashes finished with an overall 15-7 record where they went on four and five-game winning streaks with their seventh and eighth graders.

At the start of the season back in February, the junior high squad began things with a doubleheader victory over East Rankin Academy. They won 13-5 and 8-7. By mid-season, the Flashes traveled across the bridge to Tallulah Academy to win 15-0 and 14-9.

Although the Flashes took seven losses on the year, they managed to defeat every team that they lost against at least once.

One of St. Al’s strengths for the young team came from their ability to successfully hit the ball. They ended the year with a total of 134 hits while six starters batted over .300. Patrick Southerland, Cohen Coomes, Graham Cappaert(.412), Noah Ponder(.395), R Sadler(.351), and Andrew Nasif(.349) all surpassed double digits in hits and batted over .300

Southerland had the highest batting average on the team after swinging at .512. He also led the team with 21 hits, four doubles, one triple, and 15 RBIs. Coomes was the second player to earn at least 20 hits as he ended the year with two home runs, 22 RBIs, and a .476 batting average.

Besides Southerland and Coomes, Cappaert(14), Ponder(15), Sadler(13), Nasif(15), and Mason Bourne(11) all had double digits when it came to hits. Caden Crocker and Nasif both hit one home run each this year.

When it came to pitching, Coomes threw the ball most of the time as he finished the year with 34 strikeouts. Southerland also pitched a good bit and struck out 19 batters while Andrew Hembree struck out 15.

Although the junior high season is over, the varsity team is still playing and recently won a district title for the first time in over a decade. The varsity team will host Prairie View Academy on Tuesday.
