VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
Jeff Scott Jr. once faced a choice between continuing his playing career overseas or staying home to help shape the next generation of athletes.
He chose home.
Now, Scott is taking another step in that mission after being named Warren Central’s head ninth grade track and field coach. His hiring was approved Thursday night during a Vicksburg Warren School District Board of Trustees meeting.
“I want to thank the administrators and WC for trusting me,” Scott said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited about what we can build together.”
The new position adds another chapter to a journey that has taken Scott from standout athlete to championship-winning assistant coach.
Scott is entering his third year in coaching and currently serves as the wide receivers coach for Warren Central’s football team. In 2025, he was part of the coaching staff that helped guide the Vikings to a memorable state championship and a 12-2 record.
His connection to athletics, however, stretches well beyond his coaching career.
Scott starred at wide receiver for Vicksburg High School before spending his senior season at Melbourne Central Catholic. He later played at Copiah-Lincoln Community College and eventually earned a starting role in the secondary at Alabama State University. One of the defining moments of his collegiate career came when he secured a game-winning interception against Jackson State.
Scott transferred to Miles College for his final collegiate season before turning his attention toward coaching.
Early in his coaching career, Scott had an opportunity to continue playing in the German Football League. Instead, he decided to remain home and invest his time in local athletes.
That decision has now opened another door.
As Warren Central’s head ninth grade track and field coach, Scott will work closely with varsity head track coach Corey Wilson Sr., who offered him the position.
For Scott, the opportunity represents more than another title. It gives him another chance to use his experiences as a former student-athlete and coach to help develop young athletes at the beginning of their high school careers.
