VPD accepting applications for 2026 Citizens Academy

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Vicksburg Police Department is now accepting applications for its 2026 Citizens Academy, an interactive program designed to give community members an inside look at modern policing and the daily operations of the department.

The Citizens Academy will be held each Tuesday from September 15 through December 8, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with no class held during the week of Thanksgiving.

Throughout the Academy, participants will engage directly with Vicksburg Police Department officers and staff through classroom instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. Topics will include patrol operations, crime scene investigations, use of force training, community engagement, department administration, and other aspects of law enforcement.

“The Citizens Academy is an opportunity for our community to see firsthand what our officers do every day,” said Chief Larry Burns. “We want participants to ask questions, gain a better understanding of policing, and build relationships with the men and women who serve our city. Strong partnerships between law enforcement and the community are essential, and this program helps strengthen those connections.”

The program is open to residents of Vicksburg and Warren County who are 21 years of age or older. Acceptance into the Citizens Academy is contingent upon a background review conducted by the Vicksburg Police Department.

The application deadline is Friday, August 21, 2026.

Class size is limited, and interested individuals are encouraged to apply early.
