Vicksburg, Miss.-The State Tournament begins tonight for the Warren Central High School boys’ basketball team as they will hit the road to play South Panola. The Vikings are entering the tournament with a 7-18 record and the Tigers are 7-19 as they are both in a win-or-go-home scenario.
“Everybody’s record 0-0 now and we’ve been looking forward to this the most,” WC Head Coach Keith Williams said. “Now is the time but we’re going to treat this as just another game because we’ve had some good ball games the last few weeks so we’re going to stay prayed up in the meantime.”
After going on an eight-game losing streak late in the season, the Vikings put on a show in the district tournament by starting with a 64-61 win over Neshoba Central. By the end of the tournament, WC pulled off a 60-43 victory over Callaway.
“They saw that when they listened to the coaches, good things happened,” Williams added. “When they learned to depend on each other it became easy to put things away but we have to play as a team.”
Jaylon Winters has been one of WC’s lead scorers all year, but district play gave the opportunity for Nash Morgan to step up and show his hidden talents. Morgan grabbed a double-double in the win against Neshoba as he put up 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also grabbed nine rebounds in the Callaway game as Winters led with 17 on the board.
With Winters and Morgan on the roster along with a mixture of Davon O’Neal, Micah Moore, Robert Williams, and Roosevelt Harris Jr., the Viking’s chances of securing a win over South Panola are high.
“The kids are having fun right now, and LJ Reynolds is looking like his old self again so we’re enjoying the moment and we’ll handle business on Friday,” Williams said.
The winner of tonight’s game will face the winner of Ridgeland(26-4) vs. Lake Cormorant(20-7) next Friday at Mississippi Valley State University.
