Bill McRight

William “Bill” McRight, born on January 10, 1947, passed away on January 15, 2024. He was the oldest of six children born to William McRight, Sr. and Lila Lee Nosser McRight.

Bill was a gifted athlete and excelled in football during his high school and college years. He attended Vicksburg High School before moving to Greenville, Mississippi, where he played for the Greenville Hornets. There he found a lifelong friend in his coach, Jack Carter. Bill was selected as MVP during his junior year at the Meninak Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida. He then went on to follow Coach Carter to Memphis State, where he was named a 2nd team All-American for his impressive performance on the field.

After college, Bill signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and also served in the Army National Guard, where he received numerous awards for his service and training. He worked in several business fields but always had a desire to be a coach.

Bill found his calling coaching and mentoring a team of people when he joined the Carters at Wally Carter’s sanitation companies. Just like Jack, Bill considered Wally and his wife Paige family and worked with them until his retirement. He had a special talent for bringing out the best in people. Even after his retirement he was still coaching and mentoring his fellow teammates on various issues that would arise. He continued this practice of keeping in touch with them even days before his passing. Bill was a fantastic father and friend to his sons. His infectious sense of humor will be greatly missed. Bill’s kind heart, smile, and unwavering spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

There is a saying “Friends are family you choose, and Bill has a big family.”

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson Tyler McRight.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Carole McRight, sons William M. McRight (Meredith) and John Hunter McRight (Elizabeth), brothers Johnny McRight (Renee) and Larry McRight (Cindy), sisters Lila McRight, Nancy McRight and Tammy Reed (David), grandchildren Bill McRight, John Morgan McRight, Reine McRight and Oscar McRight, and great-grandchildren Walker McRight and Lake McRight.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Glenwood Funeral Home, officiated by Dr. Bob Ford.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Eagle Lake Methodist Church, 222 Belle Island Drive, Vicksburg, MS, or via PayPal: Eagle Lake Methodist Church.
