The VHS football season ended after a loss to West Point
WEST POINT, Miss. (VDN) — The Vicksburg High School football season came to an end on Friday after taking a 42-19 loss to West Point High School. The Gators ended things with a 5-6 record under head coach Christopher Lacey. Just a year ago, the team went winless but bounced back in the 2025 season, winning nearly half of its games.
Vicksburg struck first Friday night when quarterback Jamikal Maxey connected with Daquan Warfield on a 40-yard touchdown pass. West Point answered and eventually took control, building a 21-7 halftime lead as the Green Wave’s offense began to find its rhythm.
The Gators continued to fight in the second half. Deveyon Beard put Vicksburg back on the board with a fumble return for a touchdown, giving the team a brief surge of momentum. Warfield later hauled in his second touchdown of the night, a 22-yard pass from Maxey in the fourth quarter. By that point, however, West Point had already stretched the margin and put the game out of reach, securing its spot in the second round of the playoffs.
Despite the loss, the Gators showed significant improvement throughout the season, picking up wins over Natchez, Forest Hill, Yazoo City, Florence and Provine.
Vicksburg will graduate a few starters who are expected to continue their football careers at the collegiate level. The remaining players will shift into offseason training.
