“Art is everywhere!” Warren County-Vicksburg Public Library summer program begins June 4
VICKSBURG, Miss. by David Scott (VDN) — When the last bell of the school year rings, kids pour out of the school building, three months of free time within reach. And that brings the question for parents: what are we going to do all summer? One easy answer to that question is the art-themed Summer Library Program at the Warren County-Vicksburg Public Library.
Kicking off Wednesday, June 4 at 10 a.m. with an interactive performance by Jerry Jenkins and Hasan Drums, the library has six weeks of hands-on programming that will introduce a variety of arts and crafts to attendees. As the summer program title states: Art is Everywhere!
The library will be presenting programs that show that there is art everywhere in our daily lives. Sessions are scheduled throughout June and into July and will allow patrons of all ages to explore their creative side. Teaching artist (and former Vicksburg resident) Jerry Jenkins begins the festivities Wednesday with a participatory program on the art and history of West African drumming. Friday will see a visit from reigning Miss Mississippi Becky Williams and recently crowned Miss Mississippi’s Teen Avery McNair for a special story time reading.
Other summer programs include a pottery class taught by ceramicist Diana Douglas (space is limited) and a presentation on the craftwork and storytelling of African American quilts from fiber artist and author Diane Williams. There are also a variety of craft programs for all ages, where attendees will create their very own works of art to take home with them. Summer Library 2025 will finish up in early July with musical performances by local groups The Kitchen Girls and The Vicksburg Strummers. The full calendar of event is available on the library’s Facebook page as well as at the library.
“We’ve put together some amazing summer library programs in the past,” says Library Director David Scott. “But it’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff here at the library that I can confidently say that we are doing it bigger and better than we’ve ever done it before. We just hope that our community here in Warren County takes some time to visit us and see everything we have to offer. I guarantee that if they do, they’ll have a great time.”
