Body of 36-year-old man recovered from Yazoo Diversion Canal at Vicksburg City Front

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
The body of a 36-year-old man was recovered Wednesday morning from the Yazoo Diversion Canal at City Front in Vicksburg after an overnight search by multiple agencies.
Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey confirmed the man was deceased. The coroner’s office was called to the scene shortly after 5 a.m. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family.
According to witnesses, the man entered the water, came back out, then went back into the canal and did not resurface.
Earlier reports indicated the Vicksburg Fire Department was the first agency to arrive at City Front and immediately began searching the shoreline. As additional units arrived, firefighters used flashlights and other available equipment to search the waterline for the missing man.
Witnesses said the man had been at City Front with a friend enjoying the evening. According to multiple witnesses, the man removed his clothing and entered the canal. He initially came back out before entering the water a second time. Witnesses said he never returned to the surface. One person who said they knew the man mentioned he could not swim.
Responding agencies included the Vicksburg Fire Department, led by Chief Trey Martin, the Vicksburg Police Department and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office launched a boat to assist with the search, while three towboats also aided the effort, spending hours crisscrossing the canal with powerful lights before the man’s body was recovered.
