Dr. Tawanna Gibson Returns to Jefferson County as Head Coach of Girls’ Track and Field

FAYETTE, Miss. -The Jefferson County School District is thrilled to announce the return of Dr. Tawanna Gibson to lead the girls’ track and field team for the upcoming school year. With a deep commitment to education and athletics, Dr. Gibson brings a wealth of experience and a passion for empowering student-athletes to excel both on and off the track.

A proud alumna of Jefferson County High School, Dr. Tawanna Gibson has established herself as a dedicated educator and coach. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in Secondary Education/Guidance Counseling from Alcorn State University, as well as a doctorate in Education Administration and Supervision from Jackson State University.

Currently serving as a CTE Counselor at the Jefferson County Career and Technical Center and Site Coordinator for the ARP Learn More After-school program, Dr. Gibson is deeply involved in shaping the educational experiences of students in the district. She is a devoted wife, mother, and active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Dr. Gibson’s coaching journey includes serving as the former Jr. High Girls Head Track and Field coach, Head Girls High School Cross Country Coach, and Assistant High School Girls Track and Field Coach. Her dedication to the sport is further demonstrated through her memberships in the Mississippi Association of Coaches and the National Federation of State High School Associations.

With certifications in Sportsmanship and Concussion in Sports, Dr. Gibson upholds the highest standards of coaching and athlete development. Her commitment to the sport extends beyond the school grounds, as she has volunteered at prestigious events such as the AAU Junior Olympic Games Track & Field Championship Meets in Des Moines, IA, and will be volunteering at the upcoming 2024 AAU Junior Olympic Games in Greensboro, NC.

In the words of Dr. Gibson, “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” Her leadership, experience, and unwavering dedication make her an invaluable asset to the Jefferson County School District’s Athletic Department.

The Jefferson County School District eagerly anticipates the positive impact Dr. Tawanna Gibson will have on the girls’ track and field team and looks forward to a successful and inspiring season under her guidance.
