Mountain of Faith Ministries, a women and children's recovery shelter in Vicksburg

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Mountain of Faith Ministries, a women and children’s recovery shelter in Vicksburg, is facing the possibility of shutting down as early as this month due to a lack of funding, according to Executive Director Betty James.

The nonprofit has served vulnerable women and children since 2002, when it was founded by Tina Hayworth.

“I have no funds to keep the shelter running,” said James, who has served as director since 2018. “We’re likely going to have to shut down by the end of this month or next.”

The organization currently operates from a secondary location after its primary facility at 1529 Walnut St. was damaged by storms and deteriorated during the COVID-19 pandemic. That building, once the main restoration shelter, now suffers from a leaking roof, mold and mildew, rendering it uninhabitable.

Mountain of Faith offers housing for up to 90 days, providing a critical transitional environment for women and their children in crisis. James said the shelter has received small contributions from the city and county but not enough to sustain operations year-round. She has also refused a salary since becoming the director in 2018 to ensure that all possible funds go towards the mission.

“I’ve asked churches, I’ve asked around the city. They give a little, but it’s just not enough,” James said. “We don’t have money for lights, gas—anything—to keep it going. I need help.”

James is currently seeking volunteers or professionals willing to assist in grant writing to secure long-term funding, as well as donations for essential repairs and operating costs.
