Mayfield and Jones to host Community Neighborhood Watch Meeting amid recent crime concerns

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Ward 1 Alderman T.J. Mayfield and Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones will host the city’s first Community Neighborhood Watch meeting of the year on Monday, May 19, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the South Street Shoppette.
“This community has recently experienced a troubling pattern of gunfire, drug activity, drive-by shootings and other dangerous activity,” Jones said. “We want residents to know they are not alone. We are stepping in with stronger enforcement and a renewed focus on neighborhood safety.”
As part of their response, Jones said surveillance cameras will be installed in the area to enhance public safety and assist ongoing investigations.
“This event is not just about law enforcement — it’s about connection,” Jones said. “We are asking residents to come out, ask questions and feel empowered to be part of the solution. When neighbors stand together and communicate, we create safer and stronger communities.”
Mayfield added that the safety and well-being of our community is not negotiable, calling the initiative a vital step.
“I’m honored to stand alongside Chief Penny Jones as we bring this neighborhood watch event to the South Street area,” Mayfield said. “This initiative is a vital step toward fostering accountability, increasing vigilance and building a direct line of communication between our residents and law enforcement. We must face the challenges in our neighborhoods together, with purpose and resolve.”
Jones said the Community Neighborhood Watch meeting at South Street is just the beginning, with similar events planned for other neighborhoods across the city.
The event is free and open to the public. The South Street Shoppette is located at 1318 South St.
