Being a Gator is nothing new for Johnson who is a 2018 graduate of Vicksburg High School. As a sophomore, Johnson earned the starting quarterback position where he threw 16 touchdowns and over 1,400 yards as VHS finished with a 6-6 record under former Head Coach Marcus Rogers. The next year as a junior, Johnson had a breakout season where he threw for 3,010 yards and 31 touchdowns while rushing for 505 yards and five touchdowns. The Gators went 9-4 that year.

Johnson wrapped up his senior year under former Head Coach Lorenzo Breland where VHS advanced to the playoffs for the third year.

After high school, Johnson went on to play at Coahoma Community College before signing to play at the University of West Alabama. Joe eventually found himself playing at the fullback position at Virginia Union University where they won the CIAA Conference Championship in his final season.

Now that Johnson’s playing days are behind him, he is all set to call the offensive plays this Fall at VJHS.

“It’s really a great experience to be around the players and coaches,” Johnson said. “Getting a chance to be a mentor to these kids is really a dream come true and we’re going to bring that Gator swag back,” he added.
