At today’s Board of Mayor and Alderman meeting, the Ward 1 Alderman’s seat was vacated due to Alderman Michael Mayfield’s untimely death on March 11.

City Attorney Kim Nailor announced, “A special election to fill this vacancy shall be held on Thursday, May 9, 2024. Each candidate must submit by petition ballot to the municipal clerk by 5 p.m., 20 days before the date of the election. All candidates will qualify as Independents.”

If none of the candidates receive a majority of the votes cast in the special election, a runoff election will be held three weeks later, on May 30, 2024, between the two candidates with the most votes.

Alderman Mayfield’s wife, Bertha, was asked to speak. She went to Michael’s vacant seat and began to clear the black bow that was there, saying, “He lived for the City of Vicksburg,” as she removed the bow and banner from his seat. “You will not find another Michael Mayfield. Don’t even look for another Michael Mayfield.”
