Nominations for Mississippi Poet Laureate Open Until June 30
The deadline for nominating candidates for the role of Mississippi’s Poet Laureate is approaching, with nominations closing on June 30. This position appoints an official state poet to create and present poetry at state events and government activities. The Poet Laureate also represents the rich cultural heritage of Mississippi.
A panel of experts, known as the Mississippi Poet Laureate Selection Panel, reviews the nominations. This advisory council is comprised of representatives from various state cultural agencies and literary professionals. The panel interviews the finalists and compiles a shortlist of qualified candidates to present to the Governor. The final selection is made by the Governor based on these recommendations, with the chosen Poet Laureate serving a term of four years.
