Over 250 attend 12th annual Malcolm Butler Youth Football Camp

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —

More than 250 children attended the 12th annual Malcolm Butler Youth Football Camp on Saturday at Vicksburg High School, where the Super Bowl champion returned to his hometown to host the free event.

Each year, Butler brings the camp back to Vicksburg, giving local youth an opportunity to develop their athletic skills while learning from experienced coaches and athletes in a fun environment.

“Coming back to do this every year is still something that I just keep close to my heart,” Butler said. “You know I do this for the kids, and every time I say that I’m just going to let someone else do it, I just find it in my heart to not stop and come back to my community.”

Camp participants received instruction from a host of coaches and current athletes, who led drills and taught proper techniques as many of the children prepare for their upcoming sports seasons. Members of the Vicksburg High School football team also volunteered at the camp, assisting with drills and mentoring the younger athletes.

The continued turnout demonstrates the camp’s lasting impact on the community. Now in its 12th year, the event remains one of Butler’s annual commitments to giving back to the city where his football career began.

A Vicksburg High School graduate, Butler rose to national prominence during his rookie season with the New England Patriots in 2015 when he made the game-clinching interception in Super Bowl XLIX, one of the most memorable plays in NFL history.

Eleven years later, Butler is still showing off his athleticism. During Saturday’s camp, he defeated Vicksburg track standout Amiyah Hall in a foot race after Hall beat him during last year’s event. Hall will have another opportunity to reclaim bragging rights next year.

Although Butler now coaches high school football, he continues to make time each summer to return home, using his platform to inspire the next generation of athletes in Vicksburg.
