VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Sidney Lamar Evans was born on August 23, 1941, to his loving parents, James and Verna “Big Mama” Evans. He grew up in Vicksburg, Miss., where he graduated from Culkin High School. He later made his home in Yazoo City, Miss., with his loving wife, Eva, who he was married to for 39 years. Sidney and Eva were inseparable and spent every day with each other. He passed away on the evening of Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026, surrounded by his wife and family.
He took pride in providing for his family and those he loved, working for the Illinois Central Railroad until his retirement. He enjoyed duck hunting, fishing, Ole Miss football, and trips to the beach.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Bobby Evans, James Evans, Melvin Evans, and Lee Evans; and his sisters, Dolly Gillis and Madge Gillis.
He leaves behind his loving wife, his brother Jimmy “Boy Boy” Evans (Betsy) and his four children: Steven Evans, Cindy Evans Johnson (Robbie), Kathy Evans Perrine (Scott), and Keith Evans (Dana).
He also leaves behind six granddaughters and 11 great-grandchildren: Heather Goodwin (Grant) and their sons, Benjamin and Brooks; Katherine Reddit and her children, Noah and Sonnie; Kristen Adcox (Kyle) and their children, Noah, Callie, Stella, and Grant; Anna Meyer (Taylor) and their sons, Luke and Easton; Amanda Sopher (Andrew) and their son, Graham; and Beth Stephens (Kory) and their daughter, Millie.
Evans lived a long life filled with family and those he loved, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of sharing in his life.
Graveside service will be held Friday, Sept. 25, beginning at 10 a.m. Services will be located at the Cedar Hill Cemetery.
