Three Charged with Capital murder of a 17-year-old in Newton

Newton County, Miss.-The Newton County Sheriffs Office , Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), and Newton Police Department have made arrest in the Dec. 23 murder of Madisyn Evans.

The individuals charged are as listed:

  • Quintavious Johnson – Shooting into occupied vehicle; tampering with physical evidence; Capital Murder
  • Jakarie Love – Shooting into occupied vehicle; tampering with physical evidence; Capital Murder
  • Brandon Shephard – Accessory before the fact to Capital Murder; Tampering with physical evidence
  • Lakeithia Ford – Hindering prosecution
  • Carlonte Walker – Accessory after the fact to Capital Murder; Tampering with physical evidence.

“This was a senseless act that took a bright young girls life, an act that should not have happened,” said Sheriff Joedy Pennington.

A 17-year-old female was shot and killed in Newton, Mississippi last week. The deceased has been identified as Madisyn Evans. She was a softball player and powerlifter at Newton County High School.

Shortly after 2:00 P.M., December 23, 2024, the Newton Police Department responded to calls of a person shot on W. Church Street. While responding, officers came into contact with two juveniles (one male and one female). The female juvenile suffered a gunshot wound and soon after succumbed to her injuries. The male juvenile was uninjured.

One person of interest who has been identified and placed in custody. The case is under active investigation, and further information will be given when available for public interest. Multiple agencies including the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Commercial Traffic Enforcement Division, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Newton County Sheriff Department, Newton Fire and Rescue, and CareMed EMS responded to both scenes.
