USACE Vicksburg District Announces Special Archery Deer Hunt at Arkabutla Lake
VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District announces a special archery deer hunt at Arkabutla Lake on October 18-20 and 25-27, 2024. The event will feature two three-day hunts. Applicants must have a valid Mississippi hunting license. Applications are available at the Arkabutla Lake Field Office and online here.
The application deadline for the Arkabutla Lake archery deer hunt is 3:00 PM on August 28, 2024. Following this, hunters will be drawn randomly on September 2, 2024, and notified by email or phone. Moreover, chosen applicants can scout the hunting area until September 30, 2024. However, the hunting area and number of applicants may vary due to dam closures.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District continues to advance interim risk reduction measures at Arkabutla Dam in northwest Mississippi. Notably, contractor Frontier Services, Inc., began construction and equipment mobilization in early May.
Currently, workers are installing drill pads for piezometers, automated instruments used for monitoring groundwater pressure. Relief wells, which act like valves to relieve water pressure and divert excess water safely, are scheduled to follow. These wells help prevent sand boils. Additionally, the extra piezometers will enhance the USACE-MVK’s monitoring capability by sending data hourly to the technical team, enabling real-time analysis of conditions.
