Less than a week after winning a state title, Vicksburg High School’s track star Shaniyah Walker signed an athletic scholarship to Hinds Community College.

Walker’s track career began when she first started training at the age of five. She would eventually blossom into a standout athlete where she helped VHS secure four straight District Championships.

Walker’s time on the track at VHS was nothing short of magical where many memories were created. She recalled her fondest memory was in her junior year when she sprinted from last place to first in the 4×400 to help the Missy Gators earn first place.

Walker made an impact every year at VHS, but her senior year stood out the most as she became a state champion in the 400m with a time of 57.41. She was also a part of the 4×200 relay team that won State on Saturday.

“I felt great when I won because that was my goal the whole year and it was my first time winning state in an individual event,” Walker said.

Walker is now leaving high school as a state champ as she is set to graduate this month. She chose Hinds CC over schools like the University of West Alabama and Meridian CC.

“I just wanted to start off small and somewhere close to home so I chose Hinds CC,” she added.

Walker was coached by Deatra Cable who she mentioned taught her well along the way.

“She means a lot to me as a coach and she gave me the confidence to do what I need to do,” Walker said.

Walker also highlighted that her grandparents were a big motivation for her to finish strong.

Walker plans to major in physical therapy and she is the daughter of Latasha Johnson and Rashaun Walker.
