Vicksburg native, Josh Griffin, named SWAC Specialist of the Week

Baton Rouge, LA –Vicksburg native and Southern University football player Joshua Griffin has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Specialist of the Week.

In last week’s 49-10 win over Savannah State, Griffin kicked field goals from 49, 44, and 38 yards. He also went 3 for 3 in extra points as well as kicking four touch-backs in the impressive performance.

Back in July, Griffin was named to the Preseason All-SWAC Second Team. Before the 2024 season, he averaged 56.5 yards per kickoff and averaged 36.5 yards per punt.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) is considered one of the premier HBCU conferences in the country and currently ranks among the elite in the nation in terms of HBCU alumni playing with professional sports teams.

Griffin played football at Warren Central High School.

Griffin was coached by Warren Central’s head coach Josh Morgan, and he also spent time training with former WC and Mississippi State star football player Devon Bell.

Joshua Griffin committed to Southern on December 7, 2022. He is took his talents to the the SWAC where he will be playing against teams such as Alcorn State and Jackson State.

After averaging 36.1 yards per punt this year, Griffin was selected to play in the Bernard Blackwell All-Star game. He was the starting kicker for the Vikings where he booted many field goals for the team.

Griffin chose Southern University over several community colleges including Mississippi Gulf Coast, Hinds  and Holmes CC.
