Warren Central’s inaugural flag football season ends at state tournament
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Warren Central High School flag football season came to an end Saturday at the state tournament as the Lady Vikes fell 6-0 to Hattiesburg High School. The loss was the first of the season for WC, which finished 6-1 under head coach Brad Nolan in the program’s inaugural season.
“I’m extremely proud of everything the girls have accomplished this season,” Nolan said. “There were only eight teams here and I’m proud of their efforts and the coaches’ efforts this year.”
Saturday’s game turned into a defensive battle with only one touchdown scored. Camara Evans recorded an early interception for WC while Kylee Chambers was active throughout the game pulling flags.
Late in the first half, Keasia Williams and Da’Maria Cosby each had pass deflections, but Hattiesburg still managed to drive down the field. Just seconds before halftime, HHS scored on a 20-yard run to take a 6-0 lead.
In the second half, the Lady Vikes produced a few offensive highlights, including scrambling runs from Ka’Ryn Henderson and a punt return of more than 20 yards by Shaniya Lewis.
WC was unable to reach the end zone as its season ended with the narrow defeat.
According to MaxPreps, WC was ranked No. 3 in the state after winning a district title and earning a first-round playoff victory.
The Lady Vikes will lose two seniors to graduation in Henderson and Kassidy Wilson.
“It was an honor to coach them and I wish nothing but the best for those two,” Nolan said. “I can’t wait to find out where they go in life.”
The Lady Vikes’ defense allowed just 2.5 points per game this season under assistant coach Ced Jackson.
