Cage made her commitment official Friday during the districtwide senior signing day held at the city auditorium.

Cheering for Alcorn had long been a goal for Cage, who said the university was the right fit academically and athletically.

“I chose Alcorn because I always wanted to cheer there and it’s great for my major so this is a blessing,” Cage said. “I’m very excited to now be a college cheerleader and compete on the next level.”

After being recruited in February, Cage attended tryouts in April and successfully earned a spot on the team. She said the competition featured talented athletes with a wide range of skills.

Cage began her cheerleading career in the seventh grade, cheering for both football and basketball teams. By her sophomore year at Warren Central, she transitioned exclusively to basketball cheerleading and eventually became head captain.

At Warren Central, Cage cheered under head coach Erica Wilson. Outside of athletics, she served as class vice president, National Technical Honor Society vice president and Homecoming Queen. She also earned honor roll recognition and received her pharmacy technician certification.

At Alcorn State, Cage will cheer for both the football and basketball teams. She will be under the leadership of Head Coach Dr. Timothy Queen and Assistant Coach Kala Blanton.
