Warren Central High School football team clinched a playoff spot after defeating Neshoba Central 19-7 on Friday.

“I’m happy about the win but not happy about the way we played,” Senior Larry Reynolds Jr. said. “I don’t want to just beat a team by a little because I know what we can really do but I’m excited about another victory.”

Gavin Davenport and Ronnie Blossom made some early stops but the Rockets managed to make their way down the field. As they drained nearly seven minutes off the clock during their first possession, Neshoba Central eventually fumbled the ball inside the 10-yard line after a strip by Larry Reynolds Jr.

Eric Collins Jr. took the handoffs to start the Vikings on offense. WC couldn’t capitalize on their run game so they were forced to punt. TK Qualls and Blossom made multiple stops to help the WC offense regain possession of the ball.

A bad punt gave the Vikings the ball on the 18-yard line where Aden Greer picked up some yards to put WC inside the 10-yard line. The Vikings eventually settled for a 23-yard field goal by Jonah Artman to go up 3-0 with 30 seconds left in the first quarter.

WC struggled offensively to get things going in the second quarter as they turned the ball over due to a fumble and an interception. The Viking defense kept them afloat as T’Kylan Wright came up with a third down stop while Wayne Harris Jr. and Ricky Neal both shut down passes on fourth down.

Greer managed to get a few good rushing opportunities late in the second quarter but time would eventually expire as WC kept their 3-0 halftime lead.

It took less than two minutes after halftime for the Vikings to get back on the board. Collins picked up 44 yards on a kick return and Nash Morgan hit Jadarius Miller on a long pass. Greer ran in the 7-yard score on the next play. A blocked extra point put the score at 9-0. Chaka Walker and Reynolds both made some stops in the third quarter.

Late in the third quarter, WC had multiple high snaps which eventually put the Rockets in good field position. NC scored on a long pass to put the score at 9-7.

Greer, Collins, and Miller carried the ball well but due to penalties, WC had to settle on a 25-yard field goal from Artman that gave them a 12-7 lead. An interception by De’Kasei Crump gave Collins the opportunity to score the final touchdown from 27 yards out.

A late sack from Reynolds put the game away with the final score of 19-7 as WC improved to 5-3.

“These guys are just fighters and they know how to play four quarters so they stayed together and pulled out a big district win,” Head Coach Josh Morgan said.
