VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —Seniors weren’t the only ones honored Thursday, Nov. 6, at Warren Central High School‘s last home football game of the regular season, when coaches and staff presented Elvin Nevels with a special acknowledgment as the longest serving, most dedicated fan.

As a 1979 graduate of WCHS, Nevels has remained a life-long fan of the Vikings’ football team.

Sheriff Martin Pace said to his knowledge, Nevels has been to almost every home game.

“Even back when I was a deputy with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, I remember us picking him up to make sure he could get to the games,” he said.

When the COVID-19 pandemic swept through the country, it presented challenges for Nevels to attend the games; however, that didn’t stop him from being apart of the Viking’s action on the gridiron. He simply tuned in on the radio to stay a part of the action. Nevels has kept handwritten notes and stats he took for each of Warren Central’s football games. As the seniors left the field following their special presentation, Viking’s Head Coach Josh Morgan and assistant coaches presented Nevels with his very own helmet and jersey with the number 35 at Thursday night’s Senior Night. Tears adorned the faces of players and coaches alike as Nevels accepted his position at as most dedicated fan.
