Vicksburg drops first district game in 34-10 loss to Cleveland Central

VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Vicksburg High School suffered its first district loss of the season Friday night, falling 34-10 to Cleveland Central. The Gators now hold a 5-3 overall record and a 2-1 mark in district play.

The Wolves struck first, opening the game with a long pass before scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run on their opening drive.

Late in the first quarter, Vicksburg’s TeJay McKinney broke up a pass on fourth down, but the Gators still trailed 6-0 at the end of the period. In the second quarter, Javeon Henderson and Wallys Curry delivered a big hit before VHS finally got on the board when the special teams unit blocked a punt and Jaylen Smith recovered it in the end zone. Abel Gonzalez’s extra point gave Vicksburg a 7-6 lead.

Cleveland Central quickly responded with another rushing touchdown to reclaim a 12-7 advantage. On the Gators’ next possession, a fumble deep in their own territory gave the Wolves the ball in the red zone. They capitalized with an 18-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 20-7.

Gonzalez connected on a 37-yard field goal late in the half to trim the deficit to 20-10 at halftime.

In the second half, Marquis Knight intercepted a pass for the Gators, but the Wolves added two more touchdowns before the end of the game to seal the 34-10 victory.

Vicksburg will look to bounce back next week when it travels to face Holmes County Central.
