Warren Central wins their third consecutive district championship
JACKSON, Miss. (VDN) — Warren Central captured its third consecutive district championship Friday night after defeating Callaway on South Jackson Field. Under Head Coach Josh Morgan, the Vikings secured a 31-7 victory that clinched home-field advantage to begin the playoffs.
Warren Central jumped out to a 21-7 halftime lead behind three rushing touchdowns.
The Vikings’ offense opened strong as quarterback Nash Morgan and sophomore running back Javid Scott combined for a series of successful runs. After a 17-yard carry, Morgan capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Jonah Artman added the extra point to make it 7-0.
Callaway answered quickly, faking a punt that turned into a 60-yard touchdown run by Rodney Hawthorne, tying the game 7-7 in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Morgan scored again from eight yards out, giving Warren Central a 14-7 lead after Artman’s kick.
A bad snap by Callaway later set up the Vikings with excellent field position. Xavier Jackson capitalized with a 10-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 21-7. On the drive, Morgan connected with Fred Mixon for a key completion that moved WC into the red zone.
Defensively, T’Kylan Wright recorded a sack, Cordero Reed broke up a pass, and Chaka Walker added several tackles. Defensive end Jamari Gaines also snagged an interception before halftime.
Warren Central maintained its two-touchdown lead heading into the final quarter.
After Callaway mishandled a pooch kick that Mike Hall recovered, Morgan ran in his third touchdown of the night from 11 yards out. Artman also nailed a 33-yard field goal, sealing the 31-7 win.
The victory improved Warren Central’s record to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in district play. The Vikings will host Canton next Thursday in their regular-season finale.
