Warren Central boys shut out Vicksburg 8-0 for first win of the season
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Warren Central High School’s boys’ soccer team picked up its first win of the season in dominant fashion, shutting out crosstown rival Vicksburg High 8-0 on Friday night. The victory evened the Vikings’ record at 1-1 and was highlighted by an outstanding performance from senior forward Jacob Porter, who netted four goals.
“It’s a good way to get things started because we had a tough loss earlier this week, but we couldn’t have done it without a complete team effort,” Porter said. “This game is always exciting because it’s Vicksburg, and whoever wins gets bragging rights for the year.”
The Vikings wasted no time taking control as Porter opened the scoring with a penalty kick early in the match. An own goal put Warren Central ahead 2-0, and the Vikings continued to pour it on, building a 6-0 lead by halftime. They added two more goals in the second half to enforce the mercy rule and secure the shutout victory.
In addition to Porter’s four goals, Luke Bond, Charlie Esparza, and Eriam Diaz-Mejias each found the net for the Vikings. The win marked a strong rebound after a 3-0 loss to Brandon in their season opener.
Both Warren Central and Vicksburg now stand at 1-1. The Gators opened their season earlier in the week with a 7-0 victory over McLaurin. Both teams will travel to compete in the Laurel Tournament on Saturday.
