VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
St. Aloysius showed improvement Friday night but fell short in a 39-22 road loss to Cathedral.
The Flashes dropped to 0-2 on the season, but their offense found success through the air in the second half after facing a sizable deficit.
Quarterback Grant Gattle put St. Aloysius on the scoreboard in the first half with a 22-yard touchdown run, but Cathedral eventually built a 26-7 advantage heading into the second half.
The Flashes turned to their passing attack after halftime. Gattle connected with Keller Bradley for a 54-yard touchdown, cutting Cathedral’s lead to 26-14.
Cam Meyer then came up with a big defensive stop for St. Aloysius, but Cathedral later returned an interception for a touchdown to extend its lead to 32-14.
St. Aloysius continued attacking through the air. Walt Andrews hauled in a 20-yard pass from Gattle, while Landyn Davis also came up with a clutch reception to help move the offense down the field.
Gattle eventually found Andrews for a 9-yard touchdown pass. Bradley followed by running in the successful 2-point conversion, pulling the Flashes within 10 points at 32-22 at the end of the third quarter.
Cathedral scored again early in the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 39-22. St. Aloysius was unable to find the end zone again as Cathedral held on for the win.
Gattle completed 20 of 42 passes for 264 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Andrews led the receiving attack with eight catches for 100 yards and one touchdown.
Bradley finished with four catches for 82 receiving yards while also carrying the ball 12 times for 58 yards. Davis added six catches for 65 receiving yards.
The Flashes will have an open date next Friday before returning to action at home Sept. 4.
