Judge denies bond for Vicksburg murder suspect

Tavon Cain

A Warren County judge denied a request Wednesday to reinstate bond for a Vicksburg murder suspect who has been jailed while awaiting trial.

Judge James Chaney denied bond for Tavon Cain, who faces a 2024 murder charge and three counts of aggravated assault. Cain also faces an additional aggravated assault charge after allegedly assaulting another inmate while incarcerated.

Cain is represented by attorney Eugene Pierre, who argued that his client has remained in custody through eight grand jury sessions since his arrest. Pierre asked the court to reinstate Cain’s bond at $150,000.

Assistant District Attorney Branan opposed the request, noting that Cain had previously been released on bond before being arrested in Rankin County for allegedly driving without a tag, without insurance and while in possession of a firearm. Branan also cited the additional aggravated assault charge that Cain allegedly incurred while incarcerated.

Cain’s bond was revoked in October 2025 following the Rankin County arrest.

While denying the request to reinstate bond, Chaney warned prosecutors that he would consider dismissing the charges if Cain is not presented to a grand jury in August.

Cain was first arrested in August 2024 in connection with the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Korey Sims Jr. Authorities accused Cain of shooting and killing Sims and wounding three other individuals during an incident on Abraham Drive.

He was initially charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault in connection with the shooting.
