St. Aloysius falls to Winona Christian 40-21 in season opener
St. Aloysius High School lost its football season opener to Winona Christian 40-21. The game was competitive in the first half, but Winona’s strong rushing game in the second half secured their victory. St. Aloysius aims to recover next week.
VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) —
St. Aloysius High School opened its football season with a 40-21 loss to Winona Christian on Friday.
A tight first half kept the Flashes within striking distance, but the Stars took control with their rushing attack in the second half to pull away for the win.
St. Aloysius trailed 13-7 at halftime. The Flashes’ first touchdown came when quarterback Grant Gattle connected with Walt Andrews for a 35-yard touchdown pass.
Winona Christian took over on the ground after halftime, piling up more than 200 rushing yards to build its lead.
The Flashes’ offense found a spark in the fourth quarter behind Gattle and a pair of big-play touchdowns. John Hossley hauled in a 67-yard touchdown pass from Gattle, while Keller Bradley caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Gattle.
Gattle finished the night with three touchdown passes, with Andrews, Hossley and Bradley each finding the end zone.
St. Aloysius will look to bounce back next week when the Flashes travel to face Cathedral.
