Alcorn State Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Grambling State

LORMAN, Miss. (Alcorn Athletics) — Alcorn State softball split a Saturday doubleheader with Grambling State at the Alcorn Softball Complex. The Lady Braves (10-22, 5-13 SWAC) dropped the opener 6-2 but bounced back with a 6-3 victory in game two to close the day on a high note.
In the first game, Alcorn outhit Grambling 9-7 but couldn’t overcome defensive miscues and a big fifth inning by the Lady Tigers. Mariah Morgan powered the offense with a solo home run and a triple, while Yahnya Acevedo and Kennedy Terry each added two hits. Alainah Felton suffered the loss in the circle despite a strong effort from Olivia Miller, who pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
In game two, the Lady Braves came out swinging and never looked back. Olivia Miller went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a stolen base to lead the charge. Mariah Morgan and Alainah Felton each drove in multiple runs, while Ta’Niyah Fletcher picked up the win in the circle and Felton recorded the save. Alcorn scored in three of the first five innings and shut down Grambling’s late rally to earn the victory.

First Three Innings – Tied 1-1
- Mariah Morgan tied the game in the second inning with a solo home run to center field.
- Alcorn collected four hits through the first three frames but left key runners stranded.
Middle Innings – Grambling Pulls Ahead
- Grambling erupted for five unearned runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of two Alcorn errors.

Final Innings – Alcorn’s Late Push Falls Short
- Acevedo singled and scored on a Grambling error in the sixth to trim the deficit to four.
- Despite another hit from Alexandria Turner in the seventh, the Lady Braves couldn’t mount a final rally.
GAME 2 RECAP: Alcorn State 6, Grambling State 3
First Three Innings – Alcorn 4, Grambling 0
- The Lady Braves jumped out early, scoring two runs in the first on RBI doubles from Morgan and Felton.
- In the third, Morgan brought home another run with a sacrifice groundout before Felton’s sacrifice fly made it 4-0.
Middle Innings – Alcorn Maintains Control
- Grambling homered and added an unearned run in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-2, but Alcorn quickly responded.
- Miller doubled and scored on another Grambling error, and Felton singled home Acevedo to stretch the lead to 6-3.
Final Innings – Closing the Door
- Felton entered the circle in relief and earned the save, shutting down Grambling in the final two innings.
- Alcorn secured the win with clean defense and timely pitching, stranding the tying run on base in the seventh.
