Raymond, Miss – Hinds Community College proudly announces that Dot Murphy, former Assistant Athletic Director and pioneering coach, has been inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class.

Murphy’s remarkable career at Hinds spanned over three decades, during which she broke new ground by becoming the first female football coach in NJCAA history when she joined the coaching staff in 1984. Her tenure at Hinds was marked by dedication, leadership, and a commitment to excellence that left an indelible mark on the institution.

Beyond her coaching accomplishments, Murphy’s influence extended to her role as Assistant Athletic Director, where she played a pivotal part in shaping the college’s athletic programs. Her contributions have been widely recognized, including her induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Hinds Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.

The NJCAA Hall of Fame induction is a testament to Murphy’s enduring legacy and her significant impact on collegiate athletics. Hinds Community College celebrates this honor and expresses profound gratitude for her years of service and trailblazing achievements.

Murphy’s Bio:

Dot Murphy worked for the Hinds athletic department for 33 years, where she served as the assistant athletic director before her retirement in 2018. In March 1999, she was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame for her career as a basketball standout and was also listed as one of Mississippi’s top 50 Athletes of the Century in Sports Illustrated.

Murphy is a Mississippi University for Women graduate, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree. At MUW, she received All-American honors, was selected as Rookie of the Year in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (NIT) and was a member of the United States Women’s Basketball team in 1972 and 1973, where she was a silver medalist in the World University Games in Moscow, Russia in 1973.

After receiving her master of education degree from Mississippi State University, Murphy coached women’s basketball at various stops before coming to Hinds.

The Starkville High School graduate is married to Gene, and the couple has three children; son Kelly, and daughters Ashley and Jennifer, along with six grandchildren.
