Dr. Bill Pierce memorialized in frontage road name change
VICKSBURG, MS. – In a ceremony held at Medical Associates of Vicksburg this morning, Dr. Bill Pierce was honored with the south frontage road between Indiana Avenue and Halls Ferry Road being renamed “Dr. Bill Pierce Memorial Frontage Road”.
Speaking at the ceremony were Mississippi State Senator Briggs Hopson, Dr. Paul Pierce IV, Warren County Board of Supervisors President Kelle Barfield, Mayor George Flaggs and the chairman of the Mississippi Transportation Commission, Willie Simmons.
The renaming was enacted in to law by Senate Bill 2002, championed by Mississippi State Senator Briggs Hopson.
“Today, it is only fitting that we honor Dr. Pierce by naming a street in his memory: Dr. Bill Pierce Memorial Frontage Road. This dedication serves to attribute to man who gave so much, and I mean so much, to our community. Reminding us of the impact that one person can have through the life of service. I can attest that he was a man of God, and a man of faith, because he must have read that it was better to serve than to be served,” said Mayor Flaggs.
“Thank you Dr. Pierce for your dedication, your care, and your enduring contribution to the health and well being of our city. You will be remembered with great respect and gratitude. This day will never be forgotten,” added Flaggs.
Dr. Pierce worked as a Hydraulic Engineer in the Vicksburg District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers until 1968 when he decided to change career paths and attend medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine in 1975 and began his medical practice at Vicksburg Medical Center that same year.
Dr. Pierce practiced internal medicine in Vicksburg for forty-six years. A highlight of his career was the founding of Medical Associates of Vicksburg in 2008, however the career accomplishment that made him most proud was practicing medicine alongside his sons, Paul and Sam.
