Gators earned their first district win after defeating Callaway 18-16


Vicksburg High School pulled off a 18-16 district win over Callaway on Friday.
The Gators got on the board first after a 68-yard run from Collin Johnson which set up a 13-yard touchdown run from DeCorey Knight Jr. Cedric Blackmore kicked the successful extra point.
VHS made a play on special teams where they recovered a fumble on the kickoff inside the 10-yard line. Johnson took it in for a four yard score on the next play as the Gators went up 13-0.
Mincer Minor IV stepped up and recovered a fumble and Mikey Johnson provided some good defensive cover.
The Chargers all of a sudden scored 16 unanswered points along with two successful two-point conversions to go up 16-13 in the second quarter.
By the second half, the Gators got their offense back to moving as Ronnie Alexander hit Tyler Henderson for a 35-yard gain. Malik Montgomery would also pick up some dirty yards that would eventually set up a 37-yard successful field goal from Blackmore to tie the game at 16.
VHS made another successful play when Demarcus Johnson blocked a punt that caused a safety and helped the Gators take a 18-16 lead.
Most of the fourth quarter consisted of VHS controlling the clock. Callaway found themselves entering the Gators’ territory but Henderson quickly intercepted the pass. Battle, Tyler Carter and Johnson also earned sacks in the final quarter as VHS took the win.
The Gators improved to 5-3 on the year and 1-2 in district play. They will travel to face Columbus on Friday.
